FREMONT, OHIO (AP)
— A wife is blaming the media for the death of her husband, who killed himself after a videotape of him having sex with another woman in a pickup parked on a residential street was shown on "A Current Affair."
Nancy Offenburg said her husband, Gary, was despondent about his July arrest on a charge of public indecency — and the ensuing publicity — and was seeing a psychologist.
"It was eating at him so bad that he couldn't take it anymore," she said.
Offenburg, 49, was found dead last Wednesday in his basement. Police said he had shot himself in the chest.
A man had videotaped Offenburg having sex in a pickup across the street from his home in this small town 40 miles east of Toledo on July 20.
The man, whom police refused to identify, said he did it because his children could see through the pickup's open door that the two were having sex. Offenburg was convicted July 30 and received a $150 fine and 30 day suspended sentence.
The News-Messenger in Fremont reported the story, as did The Associated Press, and the graphic videotape was shown on "A Current Affair."
"I'm angry about 'A Current Affair.' I'm angry about the local newspaper." Mrs. Offenburg said.
"A Current Affair" anchor Maureen O'Boyle said the show wasn't responsible for his suicide. "I think it's terrible that his life took such a deadly turn," she said.
